THE BATWA tribe
UGANDA, 2023
“I am with the Batwa Pygmy community just outside the Bwindi forest in Uganda, who not long ago were nomadic, forest-dwelling hunter-gatherers who lived side by side with gorillas. They were completely isolated from other humans until the 90s when the government resettled them to aid gorilla conservation. Mountain gorillas were getting caught in their traps by mistake and conservation was impossible with humans living in the forest. They’ve now adjusted to ‘outside humans’, though things like rain on a roof still scares them. They are truly tiny humans, most coming up to just my chest. The younger generation born outside of the forest are growing taller due to a more abundant diet and sun exposure. The elder in the first photo said she’s 200 years old and personally I believe her”
